December 2020
A Christmas Package

A. 1 10 x10 fabric Square (the package)
B. 1 fat quarter neutral (ribbon background)
C. 1 fat quarter of fabric (for ribbon in bow and on package)

Cut four rectangles (#1) 3 x 4.5 from fabric A. Cut two pieces (#2) 1.5 x 4.5 from fabric C. Cut 1.5 x 6.5 strip (#3) from fabric C.
Sew this strip (#2) of ribbon between two rectangles (#1) on the 4.5 edge. Make two.  Put this strip (#3) between the two new rectangles making a package with a cross in it. The package should be longer than it is tall. This is the package for our block.
The ribbon / background is paper pieced.  Reprint the paper piecing template onto paper. Foundation paper or translucent vellum paper works best. There are many good tutorials of how to paper piece on the internet. This is the perfect time to try a new skill on a very small project. I do suggest you use a 1.5 inch stitch length. Also start 1/4 inch before the line and stitch 1/4 after the line to prevent your stitches from coming unraveled.
Once the top of the package is completed, sew it to the top of your package.
You now have a Christmas present. The unfinished package should measure 9.5 x 9.5.
