September 2020
Jenny Doan’s
Disappearing Hourglass #2

Materials:
One 10 inch square of neutral (white, beige or cream) fabric
One 10 inch dark fabric
Try to be very accurate with the sizing of your squares and seams. Put fabric right sides together.

Sew a quarter inch seam along all four sides.

Cut your square across both diagonals.  This will give you four half square triangles. Press to the dark fabric. If your cutting was accurate, you should have four squares that are the same size.

Sew these four blocks into an hourglass. (two of the dark triangles pointing in and two of the white triangles pointing in.) Be careful when sewing it together. You do NOT want to end up with a pinwheel.

Your block should measure 12.75.

Now  you will cut the block from all four sides. Measure 2 1/8 from the center and cut on all four sides of the block  You should now have nine 4.25 inch squares.
Turn your four corner blocks so the little triangles points to the outside. Turn the center block one turn.
Sew your three rows together.

Voila!
