November Blotto Block of the Month 2023
String Piecing
(From Fons and Porter May/June 2011)
8.5 x 8.5 unfinished

Materials needed
Multiple strip scraps in multiple sizes (I wouldn`t go smaller than one inch in width).
One 8 x 8 square of newsprint or foundation paper

Directions
Place 1.5 inch black strip, right side up from corner to corner atop your 8 x 8 square. Make sure your strip overlaps the block ends by 1/2 inch at both ends.

Place a second strip on top of the first, right sides together.  Make sure you have a 1/2 in overlap at the ends.  Sew with a 1/4 inch seam.  Press open.  Continue adding strips first right then left until the block is complete.  Make sure you have your fabric overlap at the final corners.

Trim your completed block to 8.5 x 8.5.  You will have a 1/4 inch border of just fabric all along the outside of your block.  I like to do it this way so when you put the blocks together, you do not have to sew thru the paper.  DO NOT remove paper from the back of your block until the quilt is assembled.

This is a great way to use up scraps.
